Staycation, Reimagined: 7 Fresh Ways to Travel Without Leaving Town

It’s spring break in our neck of the woods and with kids no longer at home, we’re finding ways to entertain ourselves. If you find yourself without plans (or airfare prices made you pause), here’s your reminder: a staycation can feel just as memorable as a faraway trip - when you plan it intentionally.

Instead of defaulting to “we’ll just hang at home,” try one of these creative staycation ideas designed for families, teens, young adults, and friend groups.

1. ✔ The “Hotel Hop” Weekend

Book one night at a local hotel with a great pool, rooftop, or spa. Spend the next day exploring a different neighborhood you’ve never been to before. If you don’t want to commit to a full day, consider grabbing a ResortPass and visit the pool for the day.

Make it feel official by creating an itinerary like you would for a real trip.

2. ✔ Around-the-World Food Weekend

Pick three countries and build a mini itinerary around them.

Friday: Italian night (homemade pasta)
Saturday: Japanese (local sushi spot or ramen bar)
Sunday: Mexican brunch

Create a Spotify playlist for each country and let teens help choose the menu and songs.

Why not try a local food tour? There are plenty of ideas on Viator.

3. ✔ Adventure Challenge Day

Turn your city into a competition.

• Rent bikes and explore a new trail
• Try an escape room
• Go indoor rock climbing
• Visit a part of town you’ve never explored

Give everyone a point system. The winner picks dinner.

4. ✔ The “Digital Detox”

Declare one full day device-free.

Board games
Cooking together
• Backyard firepit night
• Stargazing

Even better? Rent a nearby cabin or lake house to truly unplug.

5. ✔ The Sports Fan Staycation

With March Madness happening for the next few weeks, why not turn it into a themed weekend?

Watch the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament at a local sports bar one day, then host a bracket party at home the next.

For teens and young adults, the competitive energy makes it feel like something extra special.

6. ✔ Be a Tourist in Your Own City

Pretend you have friends visiting from out of town. What would you show them?

• Book a guided walking tour
• Visit a museum you’ve “always meant to see”
• Try a new rooftop restaurant

Use a CityPASS to save money exploring your city.

7. ✔ The Memory-Making Upgrade

The secret to a great staycation? Make it different from your normal routine.

• Dress up for dinner
• Take photos like you're traveling
• Create a mini scrapbook
• Let each family member plan one activity

You don’t need a passport to create something memorable. Sometimes the best travel memories come from slowing down and exploring what’s right in front of you.

So tell me - are you planning a getaway, or are we having fun at home this Spring Break?

Hit reply and let me know. I love hearing what your families are doing.
