Ski Season Without the Sticker Shock

Let's be honest: a family ski vacation can sometimes feel like you need to win the lottery before you even make it to the mountain. When lift tickets cost a small fortune, you might wonder if it's better to stay home and build a snowman instead.

Not so fast!

There are plenty of ski destinations where you can hit the slopes without emptying your savings account. Think shorter lift lines, uncrowded runs, charming mountain towns, and maybe even enough money left over for hot chocolate (or something stronger) at the end of the day.

Whether you're introducing your kids to skiing, trying to keep your teens entertained, or planning a winter getaway with friends, these destinations are worth a look for the 2026–27 season.

Affordable Ski Resorts in the US

Powder Mountain, Utah

Powder Mountain is known for its uncrowded slopes, and this season's deal makes it even more appealing: kids 12 and under can get up to two free season passes with an eligible adult, senior, or military pass. Kids under 6 always ski free. If your family skis regularly, the savings could really add up.

Bridger Bowl, Montana

Just 16 miles north of Bozeman, this nonprofit ski area keeps affordability in focus. Adult lift tickets run around $85 at peak times, and kids 6 and under ski free. Not a bad deal for Montana mountain scenery!

Purgatory, Colorado

Yes, there's a place called Purgatory, but your ski vacation doesn't have to feel like one. Kids 12 and under ski free with no adult pass purchase required. It's a great alternative to Colorado's busier slopes.

Ski Santa Fe, New Mexico

Looking for a family ski trip that won't require a second mortgage? Two adults and two children can get weekend lift tickets for around $400 at Ski Santa Fe, leaving a little more room in the budget for the fun stuff.

Affordable Ski Escapes Around the World

Why limit your ski adventures to the US? Europe has some fantastic mountain destinations where your money goes further, with a little international adventure thrown in.

Bansko, Bulgaria

Bansko offers affordable skiing, solid ski schools, and food and drink prices that are generally friendlier than those in the Alps. Its lively après-ski scene also makes it fun for families with older kids.

Bardonecchia, Italy

Near the French border, Bardonecchia offers traditional Italian mountain charm and better value than many comparable Alpine resorts. And who doesn't want to end a day on the slopes with a plate of fresh pasta?

Kranjska Gora, Slovenia

This charming village at the foot of the Julian Alps offers approachable skiing, beautiful mountain scenery, and a relaxed atmosphere without the price tag or crowds of Europe's bigger resorts.

Best Ski Resorts for Beginners

First family ski trip? Expect some falling, plenty of laughing, and a few moments when getting back up feels like an Olympic sport. Choosing the right resort helps!

Ski Santa Fe, New Mexico

A full-day children's lesson for ages 5–11 bundles the lift ticket, rental equipment, and lunch into one price. Fewer add-ons to organize means one less thing to worry about on your first ski day.

Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis, Austria

Traveling with little ones and willing to splurge? Berta's Kinderland offers a huge dedicated area for children's activities and ski coaching. It's pricier than the other picks, but the family-focused experience may be worth it.

Best Ski Resorts for Teens

Traveling with teenagers means finding activities that keep everyone happy. These resorts deliver plenty of skiing, snowboarding, and off-slope fun.

Laax, Switzerland

A freestyle favorite, Laax has five snowparks, an Olympic superpipe, and more than 230 km of slopes. Switzerland is a splurge, but teens who love snowboarding may think it's worth every penny.

Killington, Vermont

With 155 trails, a 3,050-foot vertical drop, terrain parks, tubing, and live music, Killington gives East Coast teens plenty of options. Lessons are available for different skill levels, too.

Five Ways to Keep Your Ski Vacation Budget in Check

A few smart choices can make a big difference without sacrificing the mountain views or the fun.

  • Look for kids-ski-free deals. Check the fine print for age limits, adult pass requirements, and other conditions.
  • Ski when everyone else isn't. Midweek trips and non-holiday dates often mean lower prices and shorter lift lines.
  • Bundle it up. Packages combining lift tickets, lessons, and rentals can save money and simplify planning.
  • Plan ahead. Popular family ski weeks book up quickly, so start looking for accommodations at least 12 weeks ahead when possible.
  • Book a place with a kitchen. Making breakfast and cooking a few dinners can free up money for activities everyone will enjoy.

Some families love gentle green runs, while others chase powder from first chair to last lift. And some just want a cozy rental, a little snow, and an excuse to eat fondue.
