Planning Europe This Summer? Read This Before You Go

Summer is coming, and I could not be more excited! We are planning on spending part of the summer exploring the UK as our youngest will be studying abroad in London through his university. I’m so excited because summer is one of the best times to explore Europe, but it’s also the most crowded! So just be prepared.

If Europe is on your travel list this year, there are a couple new travel rules you should know before you go. I’m also sharing a few lesser known destinations that are perfect additions to your itinerary and some of our essential tips for Europe travel!

New Europe Travel Rules to Know

UK Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)

If your trip includes the United Kingdom, travelers from visa-exempt countries (including the U.S.) now need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before boarding their flight to the United Kingdom.

What to know:

• Required for tourism visits up to 6 months
• Costs about £16
• Quick online application before travel
• Airlines may deny boarding without it

EU Entry/Exit System (EES)

The European Union is also rolling out the Entry/Exit System (EES) across the Schengen Area.

Instead of passport stamps, the system digitally records your entry and exit using passport data and biometric scans.

What this means for travelers:

• First visit may include fingerprints and a photo
• Digital record replaces passport stamps
• Applies to short stays (90 days within 180 days)
• Border crossings may take slightly longer during peak travel periods

Bottom line: allow extra time at airports and border crossings this summer.

Strikes

The potential for transportation strikes is at its highest during the summer travel season in Europe. Be mindful, as this may cause issues. We've had them in the past in France, Italy, and Greece.

One that is upcoming: UK Tube Strike - currently May 19-20 and May 21-22.

Hidden Gem Destinations We Love

These destinations are fantastic alternatives to Europe’s busiest cities.

Nestled in the Alps, Innsbruck combines mountain adventure with colorful historic streets.

Why families love it:

• Ride the Nordkette cable car for incredible Alpine views
• Explore medieval Old Town streets
• Easy access to hiking and biking trails

It’s one of the most scenic cities in Europe.

Bern

Often overlooked by visitors heading to Zurich or Lucerne, Bern is one of Switzerland’s most charming cities.

Highlights include:

• Swimming in the turquoise Aare River
• Medieval arcades full of shops and cafés
• A UNESCO-listed Old Town

Split

Split is one of the best places in Europe for a mix of culture and beach time.

Perfect for families and groups because of:

• Roman history inside Diocletian’s Palace
• Easy boat trips to nearby islands
• Great beaches and waterfront restaurants

Porto

Colorful riverside buildings and incredible food make Porto one of Europe’s most memorable cities.

Families love:

• Riding the historic tram
• Tasting local pastries and chocolate
• Exploring the Douro River waterfront

Copenhagen

Copenhagen is consistently ranked one of Europe’s most livable cities, and it’s fantastic for families.

Tips for Saving Money in Europe This Summer

Europe can be expensive in peak season, but a few smart strategies can stretch your travel budget significantly.

Book attraction passes in advance

City attraction passes can save money if you plan to visit multiple sites.

Go City passes are a great value!

Use guided tours for skip-the-line access

Popular attractions sell out in summer. Booking tours early can save time and sometimes money.

Company we use regularly: LivTours, Context Travel, and Viator

Stay connected with an eSIM instead of roaming

International roaming fees add up quickly. An eSIM lets you activate affordable data instantly when you land.

Check out Airalo

Use trains instead of flights for shorter routes

Europe’s rail network is fast, scenic, and often cheaper than flying between nearby cities.

We use OMIO to book our train tickets. Their app is easy to use and keeps all of your tickets in one place.

Protect your trip with travel insurance

Flights get delayed, bags get lost, and plans change. Travel insurance can help protect your investment and give you peace of mind while traveling.

We use World Nomads to find the best policy for our travels.
